If you ask any Lake Macquarie local where they go when they want to escape the hustle of daily life without actually leaving town, there is one place that almost always tops the list: Green Point Foreshore Reserve. Nestled quietly on the eastern shores of the lake, this spectacular 154-hectare reserve connects the vibrant suburbs of Belmont and Valentine. It is a place where deep green native forests meet the sparkling blue of the lake, offering a perfect slice of wilderness right in our backyard.

Whether you are a seasoned bushwalker, a family looking for an easy afternoon stroll, or someone seeking a quiet spot to watch the sunset, Green Point has a trail and a view with your name on it. Here is why this local treasure deserves a spot at the very top of your Lake Mac bucket list.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Belmont vs. Valentine

One of the best things about Green Point is that you can experience it in two completely different ways, depending on where you decide to start your journey.

The Easy Stroll: Starting at Belmont

If you have kids in prams, are pushing a wheelchair, or are planning a casual bike ride, the Belmont entrance is your best bet. From here, a wide, flat, and fully paved shared pathway guides you gently through the trees to the water’s edge. It’s an incredibly accessible, stress-free path that winds through majestic eucalyptus trees, eventually opening up to the gorgeous grassy flats of Cardiff Point. This is the ultimate spot for a relaxed family picnic, with public barbecues, shelters, and plenty of room to stretch out.

The Bush Explorer: Starting at Valentine

For those who love a bit of a workout and a classic bush track, head to the Valentine entrance at the end of the road near Bennett Park. This side of the reserve is a beautifully rugged wonderland. Here, the trail wraps around the lakeside cliffs, taking you up and down natural stairs, over wooden boardwalks, and through lush rainforest pockets filled with ferns and cabbage tree palms. It’s slightly more demanding, but the reward is a truly immersive nature experience that makes you feel miles away from civilisation.

Breathtaking Vantage Points and Wildlife Spotting

As you wander along the trails, you will find yourself pausing more than once to simply stare at the scenery. Green Point is famous for its elevated lookouts that offer panoramic, postcard-worthy views across the expansive waters of Lake Macquarie.

If you start from the Valentine side, you will quickly encounter the Rocky High Viewpoint. Complete with a rustic timber bench, it is the perfect place to sit, catch your breath, and watch the sailing boats glide across the water. Further along, the iconic Sea Eagle Lookout offers elevated, sweeping views. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready; the reserve is known for sightings of majestic white-bellied sea eagles that frequently nest in the tall canopy and soar effortlessly on the lake breezes.

If you keep quiet and look up, you might also spot some of our other shy residents, including powerful owls, ringtail possums, and even the threatened squirrel glider making use of the hollows in the ancient Forest Red Gums and Spotted Gums.

A Story of Regeneration

Standing today amidst the peaceful birdsong and rustling leaves, it is hard to believe that this pristine sanctuary was once a bustling industrial hub. For over 120 years, from 1863 right up until 1982, the Green Point area was heavily used for timber logging, gravel quarrying, and coal mining. In fact, Cardiff Point was named after the Cardiff Colliery, which once operated right here on the lake’s edge.

When mining operations ceased, a massive rehabilitation project began in 1984. Thanks to the vision of the local council and decades of hard work by passionate community volunteers, the scarred land was lovingly restored. Today, Green Point stands as a triumphant example of nature’s resilience, proving that with a little community love, industrial sites can be transformed back into thriving natural havens.

Handy Tips for Your Visit

Before you lace up your sneakers and head out the door, here are a few insider tips to make the most of your day at Green Point:

  • Leave your furry friends at home: To protect the native wildlife, particularly the sensitive bird and mammal species that call this reserve home, dogs are strictly prohibited in Green Point Foreshore Reserve.
  • Bring some flat stones: When you reach the shoreline, you will find stony beach areas that are absolutely perfect for teaching the kids (or reminding yourself!) how to skim flat stones across the calm water.
  • Pack a line: The public jetty at Green Point is a fantastic local fishing spot. It is common to see anglers pulling in flathead, bream, and snapper from the quiet waters.
  • Combine it with a local brew: After your walk, head into Valentine or Belmont to grab a coffee or lunch from one of our brilliant local cafes to support the small businesses that keep our lakeside communities thriving.

Green Point Foreshore Reserve is more than just a walking track; it is a celebration of our region’s history, community spirit, and spectacular natural environment. The next time you need a breath of fresh air, make tracks for Green Point and rediscover the simple magic of Lake Macquarie.
